Reports from CNN reveal that Deyshia Hargrave a teacher was handcuffed out of the school board meeting in Louisiana.

The Vermilion Parish school teacher expressed her displeasure and dissatisfaction at the school district’s superintendent getting a salary raise while teachers like herself were struggling.

Hargrave publicly said “You’re making our job even more difficult,” as recorded in a video by CNN affiliate KATC.

The school Superintendent Jerome Puyau‘s pay raise of $29,998 from $110,190 to $140,188 per annum was described as unfair by the school teacher.

“A superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, I feel like it’s a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, and any other support staff we have.”

While the teacher was expressing her frustration, a city marshal hired by the school district escorted her away from the gathering and handcuffed her in a hallway while she was heard screaming.

In the video, Hargrave was screaming, “What are you doing?” “Sir hold on I am way smaller than you!”

The marshal was also heard saying “Stop resisting,” to which she replied “I’m not! You just pushed me to the floor!”

According to Abbeville Police, the teacher who is facing two criminal charges was booked into the Abbeville, Louisiana, jail and then released on bond.

It is still not clear if the marshal hired as a resource officer acted on his own or under the direction of a board member.

When Jerome Puyau, the School’s Superintendent was interviewed, he didn’t comment on the teacher’s arrest, instead, he defended his pay raise.

He said “Its time that we brought to the board a salary that was commensurated with what superintendents are making”

While in 2016, the average Louisiana teacher salary was $49,745 per year and haven’t been given a raise in over a decade.

A school board member Laura LeBeouf condemned the treatment of Hargrave when she said “What happened here tonight — the way that females are treated in Vermilion Parish … I have never seen a man removed from this room.”

The school’s board President Anthony Fontana defended the city marshal’s action. “A board member who is recognized and a board member is getting ready to speak when she cut into him, that’s when the officer acted.”

Ike Funderburk, Abbeville’s city attorney and prosecutor said he won’t be prosecuting the teacher.

“I have reviewed the video and I am not going to approve any charges against the teacher.”

“I talked with the attorney for the school board, and they do not wish to pursue any charges against the teacher.”

In the midst of all these the school board ended up approving the salary raise for Jerome Puyau.

Debbie Meaux who is the President of the Louisiana Association of Educators denounced the way Hargrave was treated at the meeting.

“As an organization that advocates for the dedicated school employees of Louisiana, we firmly denounce the mistreatment of Ms Hargrave, a loving parent and dedicated teacher serving the students of Vermilion Parish,” Meaux said.

Brian Blackwell the attorney for the Louisiana Association of Educators said Hargrave is considering legal action because she feels her right to free speech has been violated.

“In 30 years I’ve never seen anything like this, this has certainly caused an outrage locally, nationally and internationally from comments I’ve been seeing.”

Teachers in the district are planning to hold a rally in support of Hargrave.
