Real Madrid was stunned by Girona on Sunday in a come from behind victory in the La Liga.
Girona who are playing in the top division, for the first time, are neighbours to Real Madrid’s biggest rivals in Spain, Barcelona.
No one would have predicted this victory at the start of the season, considering that the La Liga Champions, who are also European Champions with more history than Girona.
Real went ahead early in the 1st half with Isco getting on to a spilt ball, after Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot was parried by the Girona keeper Yassine Bounou.
Girona was founded in 1930 and had been playing most of its football in the Spanish lower divisions over the years, winning the Spanish Division’s 4th tier competition 5 times.
Sunday’s win over Real Madrid is the biggest scalp the Catalan Club has taken in its history.
The team even after going down to Isco’s goal did not look battered but kept going forward.
Twice the Madrid keeper, Kiki Casillas, watched as shots from Pablo Maffeo and Portu hit the woodwork.
The reward for their enterprise was to come in the second half, as former Middlesborough forward Stuani, scored with a tidy finish, and then 4 mins later, Portu was to seal a famous victory with a brilliant instinctive finish.
Barcelona remain at the top of the la Liga after goals from Messi and Paulinho saw off Athletico Bilbao.
The win ensured that Barcelona remains unbeaten in the La Liga, and in all competitions, stretching back 14 games.
Though an important victory as they were away, the result does, however, flatter the Catalan club.
Athletic for large portions of the game gave a push for an equalizer and it was Marc-Andre ter Stegen the Barcá keeper who ensured that the result favoured his team.
A string fine saves at very crucial moments in the game meant the day belonged to Barcelona.
The goalkeeper has now kept 10 clean sheets in 13 appearances since the Spanish Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid.
Enabling league leaders Barca to record their best ever start to a La Liga season.
