Senators Donate Bags of Rice to Workers in Kogi State.

Senators help Dino

Senators in Nigeria have donated bags of rice and other items to workers in Kogi State.

Dino Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, made this known yesterday at a press briefing.

Melaye said he pushed for the donation of relief materials to Kogi workers in order to cushion the effects of unpaid salaries.

The Civil Service in Kogi has been crippled by strikes from its members who took to industrial action as many have not been paid for several months.

Senator Melaye said, “Today, I drew the attention of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the plight of civil servants in my native Kogi State following the recent disturbing reports of deaths by suicide and inability to pay medical bills by some workers.

Senators gathered

“I’m happy to report to you that my colleagues in the Senate have immediately responded by donating bags of rice and other essential items to the workers in order to cushion the biting effects of non-payment of their salaries by the Kogi State Government.”

“The donation, which amounted to 1,280 bags of rice as of today (Wednesday), and others that will follow later, will be handed over to the Kogi State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress for onward distribution to the most vulnerable workers who need immediate assistance.”

Whilst the response was good from the Members of the Senate, many though are not pleased about the situation and their reaction.

Donating relief materials is good some say, but there needs to be an explanation why salaries had not been paid, despite Federal Government’s intervention.

“Really ? You are satisfied with “something” ??? That’s what’s killing Nigeria today ! The unpaid workers have a right to their salary ! They worked for it ! Woe betides every one in government plus the senators who are insulting them with bags of rice …. How about school fees? Medical bills? Will bag of rice pay for it? Nigeria !!! I weep for you!”

This was a comment on a social media page by an anonymous contributor.

Senator Dino Melaye gave a detailed list of Members of Senate who had donated:
