Nigerian Navy: Court Orders to Pay Navy Bricklayer N75 Million for Damages

A court order has just been passed by the court sitting in the Federal High Court in Cross Rivers state, where the court has ordered the Nigeria Navy to pay a bricklayer, identified as Mr. Etim Asuquo Akpan, the sum of N75 million, as damages for illegal hostage, torture, and shooting.

Court Orders Nigerian Navy to pay for damages

Justice Inyang Ekwo, delivering judgment in a suit No. FHC/CA/M35/2013 stated that the law is expected to protect lives and properties of the people and that the men who are given this obligation and armed by the law are first and foremost expect to protect the citizenry. They are not expected to turn around and brutalize or take their lives outside the law.

He noted that if such trend is encouraged, every citizen would be a potential victim of such brutality.

He also dismissed the argument laid forward that the Naval personnel were attached to the Quick Intervention Squad (QIS) of the state and therefore not a liability of the Nigeria Navy. He stated that such act cannot go without remedy because the Navy bricklayer Mr. Etim Asuquo Akpan has a family and other people to support all his life, now he has been permanently incapacitated by the treatment meted to him by the Naval personnel.

Mr. Etim Asuquo Akpan’s Counsel, Mr. Tanbe Mark, stated that as long as the court has given a judgment in the case, they intend to stick to it. His lawyer, Mr. Akpan, Barrister Albert Ben, was happy about the verdict.

He added that his plaintiff had approached them sometime in 2013 and they had immediately taken up the case because it is every citizen’s right to be protected no matter their status.

Mr. Etim Asuquo Akpan narrated the incidence, stating that it happened in Calabar, in 2012, while he was on his way to work; ran into men of the Navy attached to the then Quick Intervention Squad of the Cross River State Government.

He further narrated that he was attacked by the men, who are in the Nigerian Navy without provocation. As if that was not enough, they shot him in both legs and left him there to die. He, however, was rescued by members of a church around the area and taken to the hospital.

Despite what they had done, those same Nigerian Navy men, trailed him, handcuffed and tortured  him while he spent seven months in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital
