Kogi State worker Commits Suicide by Hanging

kogi State man commits suicide

A Kogi State civil service worker, Mr Edward Soje, has committed suicide by hanging from a tree in Lokoja the state capital.

It is presumed that the deceased reached the resolve to take his life, as he was being owed 11 months salary by the Kogi State Civil Service.

The lifeless body of Soje was found hanging from a tree behind the mammy market, at the Maigumeri Barracks, that houses the Nigeria Army Command Record.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya, confirming the story, said the dangling body of Mr. Soje was found on a tree behind the barracks on the 16th of October, at about 5:55 pm.

He explained that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Area D division received information about the incident from the military intelligence office in the barracks.

“Police moved to the scene, removed the corpse to the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja. Investigation is ongoing,” ASP Aya stated.

The Officer revealed that upon discovery, the body was searched but no form of identification was found, and so relatives could not be reached.

Mr. Soje had before taking his life, visited his wife, who also works for a Federal Ministry outfit in Abuja and had just given birth to male triplets, after 17 years without any children.

On this visit it was revealed that he left a suicide note for his family.

The suicide note read, “Psalm 121:3 God will not suffer your foot to be moved: He that keepeth you will not slumber. Amen. You and the three boys, the God Almighty keep and prosper you, amen. I love you.”

It was a search party organized by family and friends that stumbled on the corpse at the mortuary of the hospital on the 20th of October 2017.

Sources alluded that Mr. Soje had fallen on hard times financially as the Kogi State Civil Service Commission had not paid salaries, and a strike had been called in the state, that brought a halt to activities in the state.

He had sold his only car and a 3 bedroom bungalow he was working on, to meet up with his financial responsibilities.

It is another sad report of a Nigerian committing suicide in recent times.

The late Mr Soje Ogori hailed from Ogori town in Ogori -Magongo Local Government Council of the state.
