A former doctor says that China systematically doped its athletes during the Olympic games through the 80’s&90’s.
Xue Yinxian the doctor who is leveling this allegation against the Chinese Sports Ministry, claims as many as 10,000
athletes were involved.
Xue who worked with the gymnastic federation in China, told public broadcaster ARD on Friday in an interview of the scale of systematic doping.
“There must have been more than 10,000 people involved, all international medals (won by Chinese athletes in that time) should be taken back”. Xue says.
Her report goes contrary to what the Chinese Olympic Team Manager Cheng Zhanghao between ’82-92 said.
In his interview to an Australian paper Chen said only about ’50’ athletes Chinese were caught during his tenure.
Xue, who was the Chinese gymnastics team’s chief medical supervisor in the 1980s, said the authorities “insisted that all sports teams had to use doping substances: football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton”
“If you refused to dope, you had to leave the team,” she said, adding “the youth-age group teams used the substances – the youngest were 11 years old.”
“As long as you were not caught, you were a good athlete. The government only wanted to produce gold medals irrespective of the means,” she told the German daily
Her story gives credence to a revelation of Zhao Yu a Chinese reporter who had letters from Chinese athletes who had doped, earlier in 2016.
Anyone against doping damaged the country and anyone who endangered the country now sits in prison,” she told ARD.
Xue who is now 79 years old said the government had employed scare tactics to keep her from going public with the information she had.
“Once, eight people came to my home. They wanted me not to speak about the use of doping substances. They urged me to give up. I said ‘I can’t do that she said .
She has since fled China and is seeking asylum in Germany with her son Yang.
The Chinese Government has declined to comment on this issue.
