Anthony Joshua defeated Carlos Takam, defending his IBF-WBA titles.
The Principality Stadium in Cardiff hosted the fight on Saturday night, and it was to a crowd just under 80,000.
This fight which placed Takam slightly at a disadvantage, as he had only 12 days to prepare for the fight, did however provide entertainment and insight to the champion’s versatility
France-based Cameroonian Takam, 36, ranked No. 3 in the IBF rankings was called in late to face Joshua after Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev pulled out with a shoulder injury.
The feeling in the Principality Stadium was admiration for the spectacle they had witnessed and respect for Takam’s ability to take an incredibly high amount of punishment while blood poured from his right eye.
There was equally an unsatisfied itch on what would have happened had the fight been allowed to conclude on its own terms.
The ref was to stop the fight in the 10th round in favour of Anthony Joshua.
“It was a good fight until the ref stopped it,” Joshua said. “I have no interest in what’s going on with the officials. That’s not my job.
“I was watching him. I was trying to break him down round by round, but unfortunately, the ref stopped it. I think people wanted to see Takam unconscious on the floor, I’m right?”
This question drew huge cheers from those who remained to hear Joshua’s post fight thoughts.
“But I didn’t have control over the ref’s decision. I got the win and now we turn attention to 2018,” he said.
The attention is now on the next challenge, with Joshua not hiding this desire to unify all the titles in the heavyweight division.
This is not going to be an easy task because the WBO belt is held by Joseph Parker, the Australian.
The WBC belt is held by the immensely powerful but often reckless Deontay Wilder.
Promoter Eddie Hearn will have to figure how to meet the requirements for these bouts, and likely keen for the fights to be outside the U.K.
Joshua is a very popular figure now, and this would be the best time to take the campaign globally
