Kidnapped crew returned to ship

A German owned container ship was attacked and 6 crewmen kidnapped in Port-Harcourt on Saturday.

The Sea Guardian consultancy said the Demeter “was attacked by pirates” at about 7:00 am (0600 GMT) on Saturday.

“Pirates boarded the ship, kidnapped six crew, including (the) master, chief officer, second officer, second engineer, bosun and cook,” the statement read on its website, Monday.

It is reported that the pirates numbered about 8 men attacked the Ship from a black speedboat.

The ship ‘Demeter’ is owned by a German shipping firm, The Peter Doehle Group and is Liberian flagged.

An international firm which deals with Maritime Transportation and Energy crises, MTI Network, stated that the attack occurred as the ship entered Onne in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.

“All of the 12 remaining seafarers of the Demeter are safe and unhurt and the vessel has proceeded to safe waters,” it said in a statement.

The nationalities of the kidnapped crewmen would not be disclosed for ‘security reasons’, the ship’s owners have stated.

There had been 121 piracy incidents in international waters this year, including shootings, attempted kidnappings and hijackings of ships.

This information was given by The International Maritime Bureau.

Despite the drop in similar incidences around the world, the Gulf of Guinea however still recorded a high number describing it as a ‘hot spot for attacks’.

The waters off Nigeria remain particularly risky,” said the head of the IMB Pottengal Mukundan, pointing to the waters off the state of Bayelsa, Bonny Island and Port Harcourt.

The Head of the IMB stated that there had been an increase in these areas recently, but many more such attacks went on unreported.

The IMB said “39 of the 49 crew members kidnapped globally occurred off Nigerian waters in seven separate incidents”.

“Other crew kidnappings in 2017 have been reported 60 nautical miles (69 miles, 111 kilometres) off the coast of Nigeria,” the report further stated.
